As apposed to preping the photo inside of a paint program, is there any way
of doing non-destructive cropping inside of Freehand?

It would be handy wouldn't it?

Position the image.

Draw a path to crop it.

Select the image and cut it.

Select the path.

Use Edit>Paste inside.

You can use Edit>Cut contents to bring image back to move resize it.

Use Edit>Paste inside.
You can use Edit>Cut contents to bring image back to move resize it.
If you only want to move or resize the image, you can Option-click with
pointer tool (Mac) to subselect it and then move or resize it while it is
still inside the clipping path. (I think it's Alt-click on a PC.)

Also be aware that the 'contents' checkboxes in transform panel, control
whether the pasted inside contents transform along with the clipping path.
